Out to lunch with a coworker and client. We’re putting in our drink order and just as nonchalantly as talking about the weather, the client asks for a shot of vodka. Double blink. Did you just order liquor at lunch?
Needless to say, the rest of lunch was awkward… and our business interactions reduced to nothing fairly soon.
Not only is ordering alcohol at a business lunch really tacky, it’s one of the quickest ways to ruin your reputation with business associates.
I’ve been on a lot of client lunches over the years, but I always remember this one because it was such a terrible example of tacky behavior. Simply put, protect your reputation and don’t order liquor at lunch.
What have you experienced that was really tacky at a business lunch?

Was at a new employee lunch, and the new guy made a comment like, “I need to drink a lot of water, I’m nervous about my drug test tomorrow.” Needless to say, the manager withdrew the employment offer.
Ouch. People never cease to amaze.
